How to Plant Asparagus. Asparagus is planted in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Asparagus does not like to have its feet “wet,” so be sure that your garden bed has good drainage. Eliminate all weeds from the bed, digging it over and working in a 2- to 4-inch layer of compost, manure or soil mix. To plant asparagus crowns, dig trenches 12 inches wide and 6 inches deep (8 inches in sandy soil) down the center of the prepared bed. Soak the crowns in compost tea for 20 minutes before planting. Place the crowns in the trenches 1½ to 2 feet apart; top them with 2 to 3 inches of soil. Cover the roots with garden soil right up to the crown and water well. As shoots begin to appear, add more soil until the trench has been filled back up, level with the soil surface. If grasses or other perennial weeds get established in an asparagus bed it is almost impossible to reclaim the planting. 9 May - 13 min - Uploaded by MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living Growing asparagus made easy!
